A book and a movie... Nicholas Sparks...
Needed to watch a movie and ended up choosing this from amongst the collection i have of 'will watch one day soon enough' - collected over the years from various places...
Anyways... if anyone out there wants to watch this movie - DONT. Not at all if you're in a relationship... Not at all if that person is with you.. might just make you do a re-assessment of what you have and if its good enough!! ;-)
Havent seen this intense a portrayal of love and passion in ages... especially caught me by surprise since the overall storyline seems pretty typical - rich girl, poor boy -- summer romance -- bad parents -- both separate -- girl meets another good boy -- gets engaged -- just before marriage gets reminded of old love -- goes back and realizes all the mistakes they made... and so on!
However the narrative and portrayal of this love into their old age is what caught me by the throat and blew me up completely - well blew me enuf to get up and start writing here at 12 in the night when i have a morning flight to catch!
anyways... back to the movie...
Its intense. Yet - It seems very real. Makes it seem possible to have such a deep love in real life.. not just on celluloid.
Its passionate - full of emotions. Yet - its far from being melodramatic. at no point did i end up thinking anything else... to say its gripping is a major understatement!
It makes you want it for yourself. At least it made me.. but then am an incorrigible romantic at heart... i even refuse to believe that its possible for anyone to even exist on this earth without wanting all this for themselves!!!
It makes you wonder about the true nature of love.. not the mushy side... but the quality of it. Not the daily 'i love you honey' morning kiss - but the 'am here for you, with you - till the very end - thru whatever life may throw our way'...
There are some very very good sequences in the movie - worthy of being remembered...
The opening line of the movie - I am a common man, have lived a common life, no monuments will be built in my memory - but i have loved another with all my heart and soul. and for me that will be enough!
At one point they're fighting and the girl says it wont work because they fight so much. The guy is so simple in his reply - its BECAUSE we fight that it'll work... becoz we dont have to worry abt hurting each other, we're together here for each other, with each other because we really WANT to be with each other - ALL THE TIME!
When they're old - the kids want the dad to come back home with them since the mom doesnt remember him anyways. and he simply replies - How can i - your mother IS my home!
mmm... really really not nice! dont watch it! not if you value your sanity...
